How To Accept OXXO Pay On A Merchant’s Website?

August 20, 2026 5 min read
OXXO Pay is a voucher-based payment method that uses over 20,000 OXXO convenience stores across Mexico as cash collection points, allowing customers to pay for online purchases in cash. This blog explores how businesses can accept this popular payment method to improve conversion rates in the Mexican market.

To accept OXXO Pay, merchants should connect to a payment gateway or a payment service provider (PSP) and enable OXXO Pay as a payment method in Mexico. Customers receive a payment voucher when they choose OXXO Pay at checkout, which they can take to an OXXO store and pay in cash.

A few things to know before starting

Merchants require a payment gateway or PSP that supports multiple payment methods, including OXXO Pay, to accept payments at checkout. Here are a few things to know before looking for a provider.

  • OXXO Pay doesn’t contract directly with merchants, so businesses need a payment gateway or PSP that supports OXXO Pay in Mexico.
  • OXXO payments are processed in Mexican pesos (MXN), and a checkout session priced in any other currency won’t be able to offer OXXO Pay as an option.
  • Some merchant category codes are restricted for cash voucher methods, so it’s worth confirming with the provider.
  • With OXXO Pay, the order is placed before the money moves, which is a different sequence from a card payment and hence requires a fulfilment model that tolerates delayed payment.
  • OXXO Pay doesn’t charge a monthly or setup fee for businesses. It charges only a cash-handling fee, paid by the customer, and merchants pay a transaction fee set by the provider.

What payment methods does OXXO accept?

OXXO Pay is a single cash payment method, not a collection of options that need to be configured separately. After enabling OXXO Pay, merchants can start accepting online cash payments from Mexican consumers.

When a customer chooses OXXO Pay as their preferred payment method, the system generates a payment voucher which they can pay in cash at their nearest OXXO store. Vouchers generally need to be for at least 10 MXN and are capped at 10,000 MXN.

OXXO Pay was designed to provide Mexican customers who lack a bank account or prefer cash payments with access to online shopping. Hence, payments don’t require a card or bank account.

How to accept OXXO payments online: step by step

Step 1: Choose a payment gateway that supports OXXO payments in Mexico. Unlimit supports OXXO among other trusted cash payment methods in Mexico, including SPEI, CoDi, and Kueski Pay, helping merchants localise the checkout process and improve conversions.

Step 2: Enable OXXO Pay in the account’s payment methods and set MXN as the processing currency.

Step 3: Add OXXO Pay to the checkout page as a clearly labelled option alongside cards and other local payment methods.

Step 4: Every time a customer chooses OXXO Pay as their preferred payment method, display the generated payment voucher on screen and email a copy so they still have it even if they close the tab or lose the confirmation page.

Step 5: Subscribe to payment status notifications so that paid, pending, and expired states automatically update the order.

Step 6: Confirm that voucher generation, delivery, and status updates work correctly in test environments before enabling them for live traffic.

How to enable OXXO at checkout for the right customers

OXXO Pay is primarily used by the unbanked and cash-preferring consumers in Mexico, who account for 51% and 82% of the population, respectively. Meaning, OXXO Pay should appear as a payment option at checkout for customers in this segment paying in MXN, but not for customers outside Mexico, where OXXO Pay isn’t available.

Most gateways let merchants control this with custom rules or smart logic on the checkout page, based on signals such as currency or shipping destination, so shoppers outside Mexico aren’t shown a payment method they can’t complete.

Showing OXXO Pay to the wrong audience adds friction and costs conversions since it confuses users at checkout.

How to handle the payment voucher

Once a customer selects OXXO Pay at checkout, the payment voucher should be displayed on screen immediately, and a copy should be emailed to them to ensure the voucher is accessible even if the customer closes the tab or loses the confirmation page.

Since many customers order on a mobile device, they’ll present that same device in-store to pay, rather than a printout. For this reason, the voucher should clearly show the 14-digit reference number and the payment deadline, since the customer needs both to complete the transaction at the till. A cashier can’t process the payment without the reference, and the customer won’t know how much time they have without the deadline.

What happens when vouchers expire?

OXXO Pay vouchers typically expire within three to seven days, depending on how the merchant configures the expiry period. Once a voucher expires, it cannot be paid, and there is no automatic retry after the deadline.

This means the merchant should release or cancel the associated order when the voucher expires, rather than leaving it open indefinitely. Additionally, it’s worth sending the customer a reminder before the payment deadline to reduce the number of payment vouchers that expire unpaid.

How to track OXXO payment status

OXXO vouchers are paid outside the merchant’s website and on the customer’s own schedule. Hence, the system needs a way to track what happens after an order is created rather than assuming payment has been made. Merchants can subscribe to the payment status notifications from their payment gateway to track OXXO payments and treat every order as unpaid until they receive confirmation.

This delay is one of the key operational differences between OXXO Pay and card payments. Merchants should not fulfil an order as soon as it is created, as there is no guarantee that the customer will complete the payment.

Additionally, confirmation that the customer has paid and the actual transfer of those funds to the merchant account (settlement) can occur on different timelines. Confirmation occurs within one business day, and settlement times vary by provider.

What to test before going live

Given how OXXO payments happen after checkout rather than during it, testing needs to cover the full lifecycle of a voucher. Before switching OXXO Pay on for live traffic, confirm the following:

  • The voucher generates correctly and carries the right amount and reference number
  • The voucher renders on both mobile and desktop, and the email copy lands in the customer’s inbox
  • Paid and expired notifications reach the merchant’s system and move the order accordingly
  • Payments reconcile against orders by reference number
  • Support has a ready answer for “I paid for the voucher at an OXXO store, but my order is still pending.”

What does accepting OXXO payments change for business operations

Accepting OXXO payments changes fulfilment first, because orders now wait for payment confirmation rather than triggering fulfilment as soon as they’re created.

Additionally, card-style chargebacks don’t apply to OXXO payments because cash payments, once completed, are final. There’s no dispute mechanism for the customer to invoke afterwards, which removes one category of risk that merchants would otherwise need to plan for.

On the other hand, payments can be refunded through the same payment rail, so it’s worth designing that workflow before launch. OXXO payments should be reconciled against orders using the reference number, since that’s the identifier that links a store-level cash payment to a specific order in the merchant’s system.

Since a new voucher is required for every payment, OXXO Pay is ideal for one-time purchases rather than automatic recurring payments. A subscription can’t be billed against the same voucher twice.

Does OXXO Pay work elsewhere in Latin America?

No. OXXO Pay is a payment method designed for the Mexican market, with transactions processed in Mexican pesos. Merchants planning to sell across Latin America will need to offer additional local payment methods in each market, alongside OXXO Pay, based on each country’s payment preferences and infrastructure.
