A business in the Philippines accepts GCash in store with Scan-to-Pay and online with WebPay or through a payment provider, at fees that vary by provider, verified October 2026.

Key takeaways

  • GCash is a mobile wallet run by G-Xchange, Inc. and regulated by the BSP, and businesses can receive customer payments from it.
  • Digital payments were 64.7% of retail payment volume in the Philippines in 2025, and QR Ph transactions exceeded card transactions for the first time.
  • Customers pay with Scan-to-Pay in store and WebPay online; GCash WebPay sweeps the funds to the merchant’s nominated bank account, on a timing not published by GCash.
  • GCash for Business charges 3.2% on cards and 0.8% on QR Ph through SoundPay. HitPay, one provider that offers GCash, charges 2.3%, excluding VAT, for an online GCash payment. The BSP keeps small-value QR Ph merchant payments free.
  • Refund rules depend on the provider: HitPay, for example, refunds online GCash payments but not in-person GCash QR payments.
  • To start, the Starter plan needs only a fully verified GCash account; larger businesses choose the Premium plan or a payment provider.

What is GCash?

GCash for Business lets a merchant in the Philippines accept customer payments through GCash, a mobile wallet run by G-Xchange, Inc. and regulated by the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP). The regulated entity is G-Xchange, Inc. (GCash for Business), known as GXI, a wholly owned subsidiary of Mynt that runs GCash’s mobile wallet operations (Rappler BrandRap, December 2023).

The central bank’s mandate comes from the National Payment Systems Act, which empowers it to supervise and regulate payment systems to promote stability and efficiency (BSP Payments and Settlements).

On the merchant side, the GCash for Business Portal gives a GCash merchant one dashboard to accept customer payments, move funds with no fees and track transactions (GCash for Business MSME page). QR Ph is a separate thing, a national QR code standard rather than a wallet. The customer pays from their wallet, and the business picks the route that receives the money, GCash for Business or a payment provider. All amounts below are in Philippine pesos (PHP).

Why GCash matters for businesses selling in the Philippines

GCash matters because Filipino customers increasingly pay digitally: digital payments made up 64.7% of total retail payment volume in the Philippines in 2025, up from 57.4% in 2024 (BSP figures reported by Daily Tribune, 19 August 2026). QR Ph, the national QR code standard, carried 2.5 billion transactions in 2025, more than debit and credit card transactions for the first time.

InstaPay and PESONet handled 5.77 billion transactions from January to August 2026, up 141.8% (Daily Tribune). These are market figures for the whole country, not GCash’s own user or volume figures.

Digital payments in the Philippines, 2025, from the BSP as reported by Daily Tribune: merchant locations grew 36.3%, digital payment accounts grew 69.4% and QR Ph transactions were worth PHP 1.2 trillion.

How GCash works

A GCash payment follows one path: the customer chooses GCash and pays in store with Scan-to-Pay or online through WebPay or a provider’s checkout, the merchant sees the confirmation, and the funds reach the merchant’s bank account later, on a cycle the provider sets.

The customer flow, step by step

  • The customer chooses GCash at the online checkout.
  • The store sends the customer to the GCash page. A store that takes GCash through Unlimit runs the payment through one REST API that also covers cards and 1,000+ local methods (payment processing page).
  • The customer pays on the GCash page.
  • The customer is redirected back to the merchant’s success or failure URL.
  • The merchant’s provider confirms the payment to the merchant.

On a provider checkout, the redirect takes three steps, as PayMongo, one PSP, documents it: the merchant redirects the customer to the authorisation URL, the customer authorises the payment in GCash and then returns to the merchant’s return URL (PayMongo, E-wallets). In store there is no redirect: the customer pays by Scan-to-Pay, and the merchant hears the payment arrive.

What happens on the merchant side

A GCash order stays pending until the payment provider or terminal confirms the payment, and fulfilment starts on that confirmation. HitPay confirms GCash payments immediately (HitPay, accept GCash payments). A store that takes GCash through Unlimit gets a real-time callback for each payment; the GCash setup is discussed during onboarding (payment link guide).

In store, GCash SoundPay lets the merchant hear when a customer pays and gives instant payment confirmation. “The common feature of these products is the instant sound notification, which makes it easier for frontliners, especially when they are busy, because they can immediately hear that a transaction is confirmed,” said Iris Coleen Mariscotes, Account Manager for MSMEs at GCash Philippines, as quoted by SunStar Davao in September 2026.

Settlement and reconciliation

Confirmation and settlement are two separate events. GCash WebPay sweeps payments to the merchant’s nominated bank account using automatic transfers, on a timing not published by GCash. HitPay pays out to the merchant one calendar day after the transaction. Settlement terms and currency for Unlimit payments are confirmed with the business (payment processing page). Each PSP sets its own cycle.

For account-to-account transfers, the BSP’s 2024 redress standards set the transfer to the beneficiary’s account at two to three seconds from receipt of clearing advice (The Philippine Star, 6 June 2024). That is a central bank standard for that rail, not a GCash promise about merchant payouts.

Reconciling each payment by the provider’s transaction reference and the order ID keeps a late confirmation or a refund on the right order.

Ways to accept GCash: in store, online and through a provider

A business accepts GCash in store with Scan-to-Pay and online with WebPay. GCash WebPay also lets a merchant enable GCredit and GGives transactions, so customers can buy on credit or in instalments.

GCash offers three devices for the counter. PocketPay turns the merchant’s phone into a POS terminal that accepts QR and card payments. EasyPOS is a terminal for scan, tap and card transactions, and SoundPay Plus announces every scan, tap and card payment in store.

A payment provider changes the setup. HitPay, for example, lets a business accept GCash through a plugin (Shopify, WooCommerce, Wix), the API or a payment link, and sets the confirmation, settlement and refund terms itself. Unlimit offers GCash through its API and payment links; its ready-made plugins for Magento, WooCommerce, OpenCart and PrestaShop add card checkout (WooCommerce plugin guide).

GCash also offers Tap to Pay, which lets a customer pay with a tap instead of typing payment details: at a September 2026 bazaar in Davao, a local seller found it faster than entering details and waiting for a mobile signal (SunStar Davao).

Benefits of accepting GCash

Accepting GCash brings three benefits, each with a limit attached.

  • Reach: 58% of Filipino adults owned a formal financial account in the first quarter of 2026, and e-money accounts were the most common type, held by 43% against 21% with a bank account (SWS survey for the BSP, reported by Newsbytes.PH). These are market figures, not GCash’s share.
  • One dashboard, several channels: in-store and online GCash payments land in the same GCash business portal, where transactions are tracked together. Settlement timing for them is not published by GCash.
  • Credit and instalments online: WebPay can enable GCredit and GGives for shoppers, though merchant terms for either are not published by GCash.

Limitations to plan for before you accept GCash

Three things shape how a business runs GCash: how money goes back to customers, the wallet limits by plan, and the terms GCash leaves unpublished.

Refunds, disputes and failed payments

Refunds on GCash depend on the channel. HitPay refunds online GCash payments but not in-person GCash QR payments. GCash does not publish its own merchant refund steps. Unlimit lists QR Ph as a separate PHP method, and its refund terms for GCash and for QR Ph are discussed with each business (Card methods integration guide).

For failed payments, the BSP’s 2024 rules give two protections. The amount debited for rejected or returned batch-cleared transactions goes back to the sender within two hours of the settlement report, and senders should not bear fees for unsuccessful transfers. The rules apply to clearing switch operators and ACH participants that provide account-to-account transfers, person-to-merchant payments included.

The central bank’s financial consumer protection framework protects five rights, including timely complaint redress (ASG Law). The 2024 circular does not cover disputes over the delivery of the products and services behind a payment, and GCash’s merchant dispute and chargeback process is not public.

The refund route and its timeline are discussed with the payment provider during onboarding. In-person QR payments without refund support need a refund outside the payment, and every refund carries the order ID.

Wallet limits on a GCash business account

A GCash business account holds up to PHP 5 million for solo entrepreneurs and bazaar sellers, and the Premium plan has an unlimited wallet limit. Per-transaction limits by plan are not published by GCash and vary by provider. The plan therefore follows the balance the business expects to hold, and each provider’s per-transaction limits belong in its contract.

Settlement, disputes and onboarding the pages do not state

The GCash pages read for this guide leave three terms open: the settlement timing of GCash for Business payments, the merchant dispute and chargeback process, and whether a business without a Philippine entity can open an account. Each one becomes a written term with GCash or the provider.

A business based abroad first needs the provider’s answer on onboarding without a local entity. Unlimit serves cross-border businesses through one API integration, names the GCash documents on request and processes payments through licensed local partners (Philippines coverage page).

What GCash costs a business

GCash publishes its own merchant discount rates for GCash for Business: 3.2% per transaction on card payments and 0.8% on QR Ph payments through SoundPay, online and offline, for merchants who sign up through self-service (GCash, Fees, updated 10 September 2026). On WebPay, the payer covers a fee of PHP 5 to PHP 50.

Provider fees on top

A business that takes GCash through a payment provider also pays that provider’s fees. HitPay is one example: it charges no monthly or setup fee for GCash, only a fee per successful transaction.

HitPay’s GCash rate is 2.3% online and 2% in person, excluding VAT, and its QR Ph fee is 1% or PHP 20, whichever is higher. Other providers set their own rates. GCash fees through Unlimit are confirmed with the business (payment processing page).

On a PHP 1,000 order, those HitPay rates come to PHP 23 online, PHP 20 in person and PHP 20 for QR Ph, where the PHP 20 minimum applies because 1% is only PHP 10; VAT comes on top.

BSP fee rules

BSP Circular 1238 took effect on 4 July 2026 (The Philippine Star, 8 July 2026). The circular requires transfer fees to be reasonable, cost-based and transparently disclosed. It also keeps small-value merchant payments through QR Ph free and bars transfers between different banks or e-wallet providers from costing materially more than transfers within one institution.

Circular 1238 is a cost-based pricing guideline, not a zero-fee mandate, but digital payments made to micro-merchants earning under PHP 250,000 annually remain fee-free (BitPinas on the BSP’s fair pricing rules).

Reports of the circular give no threshold for small-value, so whether a small payment carries a charge shows in the provider’s fee schedule, with each fee as a separate line.

GCash vs QR Ph

GCash and QR Ph differ in kind: GCash is a wallet with its own merchant products, and QR Ph is the BSP-backed standard that lets codes work across providers.

QR Ph was developed by the Philippine Payments Management, Inc., the payment system management body accredited by the BSP. It was developed under BSP Circular No. 1055 (Newsbytes.PH, March 2023), which aims to turn fragmented QR payment services into interoperable ones. Circular No. 1055 is the central bank’s issuance on the adoption of a National QR Code Standard.

After the 1 July 2023 transition, non-QR Ph proprietary QR codes are disabled and no longer available to the public, so the codes a provider’s terminals display matter when choosing it.

How to accept GCash: a business checklist

Accepting GCash takes six steps, in this order.

  • Choose the route: GCash for Business directly, or a payment provider whose services include GCash. From outside the Philippines, check first that the provider onboards a business without a local entity. Since 2024, the last facility on that route withholds 1% tax on half of each payout (Deloitte); sellers with up to PHP 500,000 a year in remittances can be exempt (KPMG).
  • Register the GCash business account: the Starter plan needs only a fully verified GCash account, so its stated requirement includes no business permit. The Premium plan’s document list is not in the pages read for this guide; check it on the GCash business portal when applying. For payments covered by Revenue Regulations No. 16-2023, the merchant’s account must at all times be under its BIR-registered tradename (KPMG in the Philippines, January 2024).
  • Add GCash to each sales channel: Scan-to-Pay or a terminal in store, and WebPay or the provider’s plugin, API or payment link online.
  • Connect payment confirmation to the order system and keep each order pending until it is confirmed.
  • Set the settlement cycle, the refund route and the fee lines in the provider contract.
  • Test successful, failed and refunded payments end to end, then start accepting live payments.

How Unlimit supports GCash in the Philippines

Unlimit supports GCash in the Philippines as one of the digital wallets on its Philippines coverage page. The same page covers Visa, Mastercard, Diners, Discover, Apple Pay and Google Pay cards for the Philippines. A business that wants customers in the Philippines to pay by GCash, Maya, ShopeePay, Coins.ph or cash at 7-Eleven through one provider can use Unlimit.

Through Unlimit, GCash runs on one REST API together with cards and 1,000+ local payment methods, and QR Ph is available as its own method in PHP, with refunds (Card methods integration guide). Payment links, dynamic QR codes and real-time callbacks are available too; the GCash conditions, the refund terms and the settlement currency are agreed during onboarding. Payouts to GCash wallets are not published, and their terms can be confirmed when the merchant is onboarded.

FAQ

Do GCash fees change without notice?

Fee changes on GCash need notice: under the BSP’s financial consumer protection rules for banks and e-money issuers, clients must be told at least 60 days ahead by public notice, unless the BSP directs immediate effect or existing rules provide otherwise. How the provider notifies merchants is part of its terms, and each notice belongs with the business’s pricing records.

Was GCash’s operator approved by the BSP to run online payments?

GCash’s operator, G-Xchange, Inc., was among the companies the BSP approved to run online payment systems. In December 2019 it led a list of 36 approved companies together with PayMaya (now Maya), as The Philippine Star reported. A business can treat that approval as background, and the entity that receives its settlement remains a term to confirm with its provider.

Should a business still accept cash alongside GCash?

A business in the Philippines may still meet customers who pay in cash: Daily Tribune reported in August 2026 that cash and other non-digital methods still made up more than a third of retail payment activity, even though the Philippine Development Plan for 2023 to 2028 targets 60 to 70% digital payments. Plan for cash alongside GCash until your own sales mix says otherwise.

Does a business have to show the GCash logo at checkout?

Each provider sets its own display rules for GCash: Unlimit, for one, gives its display conditions, including on payment links, on request (payment link guide). Planning the logos into the checkout design early keeps the page from being rebuilt late.
