Four payment gateways for businesses selling into Brazil, ranked on local method coverage, pricing transparency, settlement, FX, payout, developer experience and support & reliability, verified October 2026.

Key takeaways

  • Mercado Pago (#1) leads on local method coverage and published rates, including the lowest Pix rate in this list (0.99%).
  • PagBank (#2) is the pick for card instalments: up to 18 payments, 2.99% a month for interest-free instalments.
  • Unlimit (#3, publisher’s entry) fits merchants that sell in several markets and want Brazil’s methods on one integration; it ranks below the top two because it publishes no rates.
  • Stripe (#4) lets non-Brazilian accounts accept Pix, but Boleto Bancário and Brazilian instalments need a Stripe Brazil account.
  • Mercado Pago and PagBank onboard only merchants with a CPF or CNPJ; Unlimit and Stripe serve non-resident merchants.
  • Choose on method coverage, total cost at your payout period, settlement currency, entity requirements and the integration path.

The short answer

The best payment gateways in Brazil in 2026 are Mercado Pago (#1, consumer retail and marketplace checkout), PagBank (#2, card instalments for Brazilian SMBs) and Unlimit (#3 of 4, cross-border APM coverage for non-resident merchants, the publisher of this list), followed by Stripe (#4, developer-first global businesses).

The ranking

Price bands: $ = published credit card rate of 4% or less at 30-day payout and a published Pix rate of 1% or less; $$ = published credit card rate of 4% or less at 30-day payout with a Pix rate above 1%, or quote-based pricing; $$$ = enterprise contract or interchange++ pricing (no entry in this list).

What is a payment gateway (and how is it different from an acquirer)?

A payment gateway is the technology that captures payment details at checkout and routes them for authorisation. The acquirer is the institution that accepts card payments on the merchant’s behalf, processes the transaction and settles funds to the merchant’s bank account. In Brazil, acquiring (credenciamento) is a payment-institution activity under Law 12,865/2013, and the Central Bank of Brazil authorises payment institutions to operate.

How this was scored

Each provider is scored out of 10 on five weighted criteria. The weights were locked in August 2026, before research began, and Unlimit is scored by the same process; its position is not edited.

This ranking is published by Unlimit. Unlimit is #3 on this list and is scored on the same rubric as every other entry.

How this was scored

Known limitations:

  • Scope: 30+ providers were screened, and only those serving Brazil online were scored.
  • Pricing: bands reflect published rates or, where none are published, the pricing model, and a merchant’s quote may differ.
  • Publisher status: Unlimit publishes this list and is ranked within it.

This list is not professional advice. Every provider fact on the page was checked against the provider’s own pages or filings in October 2026, and market figures carry their source and date inline.

Where Unlimit fits

Unlimit is #3 of 4 (7.7 / 10): it sits below Mercado Pago and PagBank on pricing transparency because it publishes no rates for Brazil.

Right for: merchants that sell in several markets and want Brazilian cards, Pix, Boleto Bancário and instalments through the same integration they use elsewhere.

Not the best fit for: merchants who want published, self-serve rates before they speak to sales, since Unlimit quotes pricing individually, or recurring billing on Pix and other alternative methods, which Unlimit’s docs say is not supported.

Every entry

Every card below, the #1 pick and the publisher’s entry included, carries one strength and one criticism.

Mercado Pago

  • Verdict: Mercado Pago puts credit and debit cards, Pix, Boleto Bancário, Mercado Pago balance and card-free instalments through Mercado Crédito into one checkout for Brazilian consumers, and publishes its rates.
  • Best for: consumer retail and marketplace checkout.
  • Price band: $ — published Checkout fees: 4.98% for credit cards with instant availability, 4.49% at 14 days and 3.98% at 30 days. Pix costs 0.99% and a boleto R$ 3.49.
  • Company: the fintech arm of MercadoLibre, Inc., whose principal executive offices are in Montevideo, Uruguay. Its Brazilian entity has been authorised by the Central Bank of Brazil (Banco Central do Brasil) as an e-money issuer since 2018 and as an acquirer since March 2020 (MercadoLibre Form 10-K, FY2025).
  • Strength: the lowest published checkout Pix rate in this list (0.99%). Split de Pagamentos 1:1 divides payments between a marketplace and its sellers in both Checkout Pro and Checkout Transparente.
  • Criticism: only Brazil residents with a CPF or CNPJ can register (Mercado Pago terms of use), and payments are received only in Brazilian reais (BRL) (Mercado Pago help), so a merchant without a Brazilian entity cannot sign up.
  • Use cases: marketplaces, consumer retail, Pix, digital wallets, instalments.
  • Risk signals: low — the AWS outage of 20 October 2025 caused instability at Mercado Pago and other large sites and apps, while the Central Bank’s own systems worked normally (Agência Brasil), as of October 2026.
  • Score: 8.6 / 10, #1 of 4, verified October 2026.

PagBank

  • Verdict: PagBank is a Brazilian payments and banking provider whose online checkout accepts cards, Pix, Boleto Bancário and wallets, offers card instalments of up to 18 payments, and publishes its card and Pix rates.
  • Best for: card instalments for Brazilian SMBs.
  • Price band: $$ — published Checkout PagBank rates: 4.99% + R$ 0.40 for one-off credit card payments at 14 days, or 3.99% + R$ 0.40 at 30 days. Pix costs 1.89%, and offering interest-free instalments to the buyer costs 2.99% a month.
  • Company: PagSeguro Digital Ltd. (NYSE: PAGS), created in 2006 under the PagSeguro brand, incorporated in the Cayman Islands with its operating offices in São Paulo, and controlled by UOL (PagSeguro Form 20-F, FY2025).
  • Strength: one checkout (PagBank developer docs), with instalments of up to 18 payments, covers:
    • credit and debit cards
    • Pix and Boleto Bancário
    • PagBank balance
    • Apple Pay and Google Pay
  • Criticism: merchant accounts are opened with a Brazilian CPF or CNPJ (PagBank help), so non-resident merchants cannot sign up for the standard account.
  • Context: PagBank reported 34.1 million clients at the end of June 2026 (PagBank Q2 2026 results). International merchants are served by a separate cross-border platform, PagSeguro Tecnologia (PagSeguro Form 20-F, FY2025), which is not the PagBank account scored here.
  • Use cases: SMBs, instalments, Pix, boleto, digital banking.
  • Risk signals: low — about 31,200 active consumer-rights proceedings at 31 December 2025, mostly claims that merchants did not deliver products and requests to release balances blocked under fraud investigation. No cybersecurity incident had a significant impact in 2025 (PagSeguro Form 20-F, FY2025).
  • Score: 8.1 / 10, #2 of 4, verified October 2026.

Unlimit

  • Publisher’s entry.
  • Verdict: Unlimit is a payment gateway and acquirer that covers Brazilian cards, Pix, Boleto Bancário, digital wallets and card instalments through one integration.
  • Best for: cross-border APM coverage for non-resident merchants.
  • Price band: $$ — no published rates; pricing is quoted by sales (Unlimit contacts page).
  • Company: Unlimit, a London-based fintech (Unlimit rebrand release, May 2023), founded in 2009 (PR Newswire, December 2025). It operated as Cardpay until it was renamed Unlimint in November 2020 (Finance Magnates).
  • Strength: acquirer in Brazil directly integrated with Visa, Mastercard, Elo and Amex, with a Payment Institution licence from the Central Bank of Brazil, announced in October 2025. The same integration adds:
    • other card brands, Pix, Boleto Bancário and NuPay
    • PicPay, Mercado Pago, Apple Pay, Google Pay and PayPal wallets (Unlimit Brazil coverage page)
    • merchant-financed instalments of 2 to 12 payments on Brazilian-issued Visa and Mastercard credit cards
    • a REST API with Payment Page, Gateway and server-to-server modes, SDKs, plugins for Magento, WooCommerce, OpenCart and PrestaShop, and a VTEX integration (Unlimit integration docs)
  • Criticism: Unlimit publishes no rates for Brazil, so a merchant cannot compare its cost before talking to sales.
  • Context: Unlimit’s docs state that recurring payments are not supported for Pix and other alternative payment methods.
  • Use cases: cross-border, single integration, local acquiring, multiple markets.
  • Risk signals: none found, as of October 2026.
  • Score: 7.7 / 10, #3 of 4, verified October 2026.

Stripe

  • Verdict: Stripe is an API-first gateway that lets accounts outside Brazil accept Pix from Brazilian customers, while Boleto Bancário and Brazilian pricing require a Stripe Brazil account.
  • Best for: developer-first global businesses.
  • Price band: $$ — published pricing for Stripe Brazil accounts: 3.99% + R$ 0.39 per domestic card transaction, +2% for international cards, R$ 3.45 per paid boleto and 1.19% per paid Pix (Pix by invitation only).
  • Company: Stripe, with dual headquarters in San Francisco and Dublin (Stripe newsroom).
  • Strength: Pix is open to Stripe accounts in the US, the UK, Canada, Australia, Singapore and most EEA countries, settling in a currency based on the account country. The Brazilian customer pays the 3.5% IOF tax by default.
  • Criticism: boleto bank vouchers work only for Stripe Brazil accounts, and Stripe’s instalments documentation lists no Brazilian card-instalment product, so a merchant cannot offer parcelamento through Stripe.
  • Context: Stripe Brazil accounts receive domestic card payouts after 30 days and Pix and boleto payouts after 2 days (Stripe support).
  • Use cases: developer experience, global expansion, Pix, hosted checkout.
  • Risk signals: none found, as of October 2026.
  • Score: 7.4 / 10, #4 of 4, verified October 2026.

Best for cross-border / non-resident merchants

Unlimit (#3, 7.7 / 10, publisher’s entry) is the pick for cross-border payments into Brazil from abroad: it acquires cards locally in Brazil and adds Pix, Boleto Bancário, digital wallets and instalments of 2 to 12 payments through one integration.

Also consider Stripe (#4, 7.4 / 10) for card and Pix acceptance from a non-Brazilian account: Stripe accounts in the US, the UK and most EEA countries can accept Pix.

Best for card instalments (parcelamento)

PagBank (#2, 8.1 / 10) is the pick in Brazil for online purchases paid by credit card in instalments: up to 18 instalments, with interest-free instalments costing the merchant 2.99% a month.

Best for marketplaces

Mercado Pago (#1, 8.6 / 10) is the pick for multi-seller e-commerce platforms selling to Brazilian consumers: Split de Pagamentos 1:1 divides a single payment between the marketplace and its sellers.

Best for developer experience

Stripe (#4, 7.4 / 10) is the pick for engineering-led teams in Brazil: Stripe documents each Brazilian method it supports — cards, Pix and Boleto Bancário — in public developer docs, including which account countries can use each one.

Do I need a local entity to accept payments in Brazil?

Not always: the need for a local entity in Brazil depends on the provider and the payment method.

Mercado Pago and PagBank require a Brazilian CPF or CNPJ. Stripe accepts Pix on accounts in the US, the UK, Canada, Australia, Singapore and most EEA countries, but Boleto Bancário only on Stripe Brazil accounts.

Under local regulations, eFX is the Central Bank’s term for an international payment service that lets a buyer in Brazil pay for goods or services abroad. From 1 October 2026, eFX providers must be banks, brokers or payment institutions authorised by the Central Bank of Brazil. Each must hold a contract with the foreign counterparty and run know-your-customer checks on it (Resolution BCB 277/2022, as amended by Resolution BCB 561/2026). These duties fall on the provider.

LGPD applies to processing aimed at offering goods or services to people in Brazil, wherever the company is based (Art. 3).

Brazilian customers paying an international business by Pix through Stripe pay 3.5% IOF tax by default (Stripe Pix docs).

Which local methods must a Brazil gateway support?

To reach Brazilian buyers online, a gateway needs these payment methods in Brazil:

  • Credit cards with instalments (parcelamento).
  • Pix, the Central Bank of Brazil’s instant payment scheme, launched on 16 November 2020 and running 24 hours a day, including weekends and holidays. Pix Automático, live since 16 June 2025, lets a payer authorise recurring Pix payments once.
  • Boleto Bancário, a bank voucher that is part of a payment arrangement instituted by the Central Bank. It can be paid at bank counters, ATMs, through internet banking or by Pix when it carries a QR code. Boleto is the voucher option for buyers without a card.
  • Digital wallets.

In 2025, Pix made up 42% of Brazilian e-commerce value, credit cards 40%, digital wallets 10%, debit cards 4% and cash-based methods 3% (Worldpay Global Payments Report 2026). Interest-free instalments made up 49.5% of remote credit and prepaid card purchase value in 2025 (ABECS, 2025 results). 148 million individuals, about 86% of Brazilian adults, and 12.8 million businesses made or received a Pix in 2025, according to the Central Bank of Brazil’s Pix management report.

What is the most popular payment method in Brazil? Pix: 46.1% of Brazilians name it as the method they use most often (Central Bank of Brazil survey, 2024). Merchants in the same survey receive credit cards most often (41.9%), and online, Pix leads credit cards only narrowly by value, 42% against 40%.

What is the best online payment app in Brazil? No official ranking of payment apps exists. Pix is not an app but a scheme that runs inside bank and fintech apps, and digital wallets made up 10% of e-commerce value in 2025.

How to choose a payment gateway in Brazil

  1. Map the gateway’s coverage of local payment methods against how Brazilian buyers pay: cards with instalments, Pix, Boleto Bancário and digital wallets.
  2. Model total cost against your average order value, method mix and payout period, since published card rates, such as Mercado Pago’s and PagBank’s, change with how fast funds are released.
  3. Confirm the settlement currency, payout timing and FX handling.
  4. Check whether the provider needs a Brazilian CPF or CNPJ, and whether the Central Bank of Brazil has authorised it for what it does.
  5. Test the API, hosted checkout or plugin path before choosing.
