# Satispay for Business: How It Works, How to Accept It and What to Expect

A business in Italy accepts Satispay through a free Satispay Business registration, pays no fee under EUR 10 as a new physical-store merchant, and goes live in six steps, verified October 2026.

## Key takeaways

- Satispay is a wallet app for customers; Satispay Business is the service that lets a merchant receive those payments.
- Satispay’s network reached 6.5 million users in Italy in May 2026, and Satispay reads the new Italian obligation to accept electronic payments as covering digital wallets.
- The customer pays in the app and the merchant accepts the notification; Satispay credits the Merchant Account once a payment is approved, and the bank payout is a separate event.
- New physical-store merchants from September 2026 pay nothing under EUR 10 and 0.95% from EUR 10, and registration has no activation costs or monthly fees.
- In shops, only one of the last 3 accepted transactions can be cancelled; online cancellation runs up to 365 days.
- To start, a business registers, accepts the terms and waits a few working days for document checks.

## What is Satispay?

Satispay is a stored-value wallet app, run by Satispay as an electronic money institution, that lets customers pay by smartphone in shops and online in Italy in euro; Satispay Business is the service that lets a merchant receive those payments.

The [EU Digital Finance Platform](https://digital-finance-platform.ec.europa.eu/observatory/eu-fintech-map/satispay-europe-sa) lists Satispay as a free app for digital payments and online money transfers. [Stripe’s Satispay documentation](https://docs.stripe.com/payments/satispay), from one provider that offers the method, describes it as a stored-value wallet payment method available to merchants. Unlimit carries Satispay among the 1,000+ local methods a business reaches through [one REST API](https://www.unlimit.com/payment-processing/), alongside cards, across 200+ locations.

### Satispay Business terms

The customer uses the Satispay app, while the merchant works in the Satispay Business service. [Satispay’s business terms](https://www.satispay.com/en-it/legal-hub/terms-and-conditions/business/) describe Satispay as an electronic money institution. They state that the Satispay Business service lets merchants receive payments, including recurring ones, from consumers and from businesses that use E-money issued by Satispay.

A business that accepts Satispay therefore accepts Satispay’s own business terms, also when a payment service provider sits in the route.

## Why Satispay matters for businesses selling in Italy

Satispay matters to a business selling in Italy for two reasons: the size of its network and a new legal obligation.

The network reached 6.5 million users in Italy and more than 450,000 affiliated stores at May 2026 ([Satispay newsroom, 11 June 2026](https://www.satispay.com/en-it/newsroom/satispay-aumento-di-capitale-per-accelerare-la-crescita/)).

### The electronic payment obligation

Satispay presents Satispay Business as a way to meet the new obligation in article 1-undecies of decree-law 63/2026 on the [Satispay Business page](https://www.satispay.com/it-it/business/). [Satispay’s blog post on the new merchant fees](https://www.satispay.com/it-it/blog/mondo-satispay/nuove-commissioni-esercenti-informazioni/) says the “Carburanti-ter” decree, converted into law, extends the obligation to accept electronic payments to at least one electronic money instrument, meaning digital wallets and payment apps. [Economy Magazine’s report of 24 June 2026](https://www.economymagazine.it/pagamenti-digitali-cambia-tutto-la-moneta-elettronica-diventa-obbligatoria-e-spinge-la-concorrenza/) says the obligation covers all forms of digital payments, including mobile apps and e-wallets.

Both are descriptions of the decree, not its text, so whether it binds a given business is a question for its adviser. A business that must offer an electronic money instrument has a reason to evaluate Satispay.

## How Satispay Business works

In a shop, this is how Satispay Business works: the customer opens the Satispay app, selects the shop and types the amount, the merchant sees the request and accepts it, Satispay credits the Merchant Account, and the takings reach the bank on the merchant’s schedule.

### The customer flow, step by step

A Satispay payment in a shop runs through five events, set out in [Satispay’s guide to collecting digital meal vouchers](https://www.satispay.com/it-it/blog/welfare-benefits/incasso-buoni-pasto-digitali-satispay/):

- The customer opens the Satispay app.
- The customer selects the merchant’s shop.
- The customer types the receipt total.
- The merchant sees the customer’s name and the amount on the payment notification.
- The merchant checks both and accepts the payment with a tap.

![How a Satispay payment moves from the customer to the business in a shop, from Satispay's guides.](https://cdn.unlimit.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/29165521/satispay-business-image-1.webp)*How a Satispay payment moves from the customer to the business in a shop, from Satispay’s guides.*

Online, the customer is redirected to Satispay’s website to finish the payment, as one PSP, Stripe, documents it. Other processors add their own entry points: at Unlimit, for example, the shopper can also pay from a [payment link](https://integration.unlimit.com/doc-guides/vejut2c18ng0y-p-payment-link) or a dynamic QR code. A link stays valid for 30 days ([payment link guide](https://integration.unlimit.com/doc-guides/vejut2c18ng0y-p-payment-link)).

### What happens on the merchant side

In a shop, the merchant’s tap is the confirmation of a Satispay payment. Once a payment is approved, Satispay credits the amount to the Merchant Account, visible in the Satispay Business Suite. Online, confirmation timing depends on the PSP: Stripe confirms immediately and redirects the customer back to the merchant’s website, while Unlimit sends a real-time callback for each payment; the Satispay setup is discussed during onboarding ([payment link guide](https://integration.unlimit.com/doc-guides/vejut2c18ng0y-p-payment-link)).

Payouts then run on two separate timelines. Satispay pays collected takings into the bank account automatically, at the frequency the merchant has set, for example on the first working day after approval. A PSP route follows the processor’s own schedule, for example Stripe’s standard payout schedule.

The Satispay Business Dashboard shows the balance and payment history, with each amount, the payer reference, any fees with their breakdown and the credit date; payer reference and credit date tie each credit to an order.

Until the merchant has accepted a payment, the order stays pending.

## Ways to accept Satispay: shop QR code, POS, API and plugins

A business can accept payments with Satispay in physical stores through a QR code sticker, the Satispay Business App, a cash register or POS, and online through plugins, a payment service provider or the API.

In shops, merchants place the QR code sticker that Satispay provides and can install a Satispay Business App on a compatible device to approve payments. A cash register takes Satispay once its vendor upgrades the terminal ([Satispay’s help article on accepting payments](https://support.satispay.com/en/articles/brick-mortar-on-the-move)), and Satispay’s partners provide Ingenico and PAX POS terminals.

Satispay also provides a web-services API to integrate the software that manages payments in the shops. The [Web Redirect developer docs](https://developers.satispay.com/docs/web-redirect-pay) cover a Satispay-hosted page with the QR code or a mobile phone number field, where the consumer finishes the payment.

Online, the [payment service providers on Satispay’s e-commerce help page](https://support.satispay.com/de/articles/e-commerce-websites) are Boku, Nuvei, PPRO, Stripe, Thunes, Finby, Mollie, Axerve (Fabrick), N&TS and SIA VPOS. Unlimit also offers Satispay, with single-use or reusable payment links ([payment link guide](https://integration.unlimit.com/doc-guides/vejut2c18ng0y-p-payment-link)). Plugins exist for Shopify and WooCommerce, both official and third-party. Online stores are not visible in the Satispay app, so the merchant always enters a code to activate the service ([Satispay’s help article on shops](https://support.satispay.com/en/articles/stores)).

Users grant consent to recurring Satispay payments on the merchant’s terms.

## Benefits of accepting Satispay

Accepting Satispay brings a business three benefits, each with a limit.

- No fee on small payments: new physical-store merchants pay nothing under EUR 10, yet the average receipt was EUR 13 to 15 in early 2025 ([Altroconsumo](https://www.altroconsumo.it/soldi/conti-correnti/news/commissioni-satispay)); a shop that signed up earlier works from its own conditions.
- Credit on approval and a free bank deposit: Satispay credits the Merchant Account once a payment is approved and charges nothing to deposit takings to the bank; the bank payout remains a separate event.
- A fit with the new obligation: Satispay reads a wallet as meeting the duty, a reading the business’s adviser checks. In 2025, 24% of POS transactions in Italy ran on a smartphone or smartwatch ([Il Sole 24 Ore](https://en.ilsole24ore.com/art/contactless-payments-are-booming-but-cash-remains-the-most-widely-used-method-in-shops-AJsWAew)).

## Limitations to plan for before you accept Satispay

Two things shape how a business runs Satispay day to day: the way payments are cancelled or disputed, and the account checks Satispay carries out.

### Refunds, cancellations and disputes

Satispay refunds and cancellations follow three routes: shops, online through Satispay’s plugins or API, and the terms of a payment processor such as Stripe or Unlimit.

- In shops: a Satispay payment can be cancelled only if it is one of the last 3 accepted transactions ([Satispay’s help article on cancelling payments](https://support.satispay.com/de/articles/zahlungen-stornieren)); the cancellation can cover the whole transaction or part of it, and both are irrevocable.
- Online through Satispay’s plugins or API: cancellation runs through the e-commerce plugins or the online API, up to 365 days from the date the payment was received, and only if the payments not yet transferred to the merchant’s account equal or exceed the amount.
- Stripe, one PSP, takes refunds submitted within 180 days of the original payment, through Stripe’s Dashboard or its Refunds API; they take up to 5 minutes, cannot be cancelled and always return to the customer’s Satispay wallet balance, never as a reversal.
- Through any PSP, the refund route and window are agreed in its contract; Unlimit, for example, confirms its refund terms for Satispay with each business ([Card methods integration guide](https://integration.unlimit.com/doc-guides/ci8k5zm86k3ny-card-methods)).

Merchants may keep an amount in the Merchant Account to carry out refunds, for example for faulty goods.

### Disputes

Only Stripe documents a dispute route: the customer has up to 120 calendar days from purchase to file, the disputed amount is withheld from the merchant’s balance, and the merchant has 15 calendar days to make its case with documents. Satispay then issues a final decision within 25 calendar days of dispute creation. Satispay’s pages show no dispute or chargeback rules for merchants contracting directly with it.

A business that will activate Satispay in several channels sets a refund route for each, keeps a refund balance in the account and records the order reference on every refund.

### Account checks and suspension

Satispay can refuse or suspend a business account on the grounds its business terms and conditions set. It may decline to activate the Services, or deny, suspend or limit access, under anti-money laundering due diligence if it cannot obtain and verify the information and documents it needs. It may also suspend the Services if it has reasonable concerns about the security of the Merchant Account or suspects fraudulent or unauthorised use.

The documents Satispay needs and the business types it accepts are settled with Satispay or the payment service provider, since its public pages do not set them out.

## What Satispay costs a business

### Registration and store fees

Satispay charges its fees to the merchant. Satispay Business costs start with a registration that carries no activation costs and no monthly fees, by Satispay’s account. New merchants with physical stores signing up from September 2026 pay Satispay Business merchant fees of zero on transactions under EUR 10 and 0.95% on transactions of EUR 10 or more ([Satispay Business page](https://www.satispay.com/en-it/business/)). Depositing takings to the merchant’s bank account is free.

A new physical-store merchant pays nothing on a EUR 8 payment, EUR 0.38 on a EUR 40 payment and EUR 0.95 on a EUR 100 payment.

Satispay fees may also apply to value-added services, namely meal vouchers, purchase vouchers and Pay in 3, so a merchant that uses them checks its own conditions.

Satispay’s pages show no standard rate for e-commerce, on-the-move and vending-machine merchants; their rate is set in their own agreement. A payment service provider in the route may add its own fee, set in its contract.

## Satispay in shops vs Satispay online

The shop route is the best documented for physical stores; online, limits, refunds and disputes follow the provider’s own terms.

Satispay in shops vs Satispay online

| Attribute | In a shop | Online |
|---|---|---|
| How the customer pays | Opens the Satispay app, selects the shop and types the amount | Selects Satispay at checkout and is redirected to Satispay’s page (PSP flow, e.g. Stripe) |
| Confirmation to the business | The merchant accepts the notification with a tap | Varies by PSP; at Stripe, immediate |
| Refunds | Only one of the last 3 accepted transactions | Plugins or API up to 365 days; PSPs: Stripe, 180 days; Unlimit, terms on request (Card methods integration guide) |
| Disputes | None published by Satispay | Varies by PSP; at Stripe, 120 calendar days to file |
| Recurring payments | User consent on the merchant’s terms | User consent on the merchant’s terms |
| Reach | QR code sticker in physical shops | Not shown in the Satispay app; the merchant enters a code |

## How to accept Satispay: a business checklist

A business starts to accept payments with Satispay in six steps; the second and third show how to activate Satispay Business.

- Choose the route: directly with Satispay Business, through a payment service provider from Satispay’s list, or, outside that list, through Unlimit, which carries Satispay as a digital wallet for Italy.
- Register for Satispay Business, which requires a Satispay Business Dashboard profile, and accept the Terms and Conditions; Satispay then takes a few working days to verify the documents ([Satispay’s help article on registration data](https://support.satispay.com/en/articles/accepting-terms-and-conditions)).
- Finish the activation, either alone with the instructions Satispay sends by email ([Satispay’s help article on activation](https://support.satispay.com/it/articles/modalita-di-attivazione)) or in a phone appointment booked with the Satispay team.
- Set up the acceptance mode: QR code sticker and Satispay Business App, cash register or POS, or plugin or API.
- Set the payout frequency to the bank and check the fee breakdown in the Satispay Business Dashboard.
- Test a payment, a cancellation and a refund end to end for each channel, then launch.

### Accepting Satispay from outside Italy

A business outside Italy has one documented route to Satispay customers: a payment service provider, either one from Satispay’s list or one such as Unlimit that lists Satispay on its own coverage page.

Stripe, one provider that offers Satispay, lists customers in Italy, the euro (EUR) as the presentment currency and both domestic and cross-border coverage. A business outside Italy can also accept Satispay from customers in Italy through Unlimit. Its EU entity, Unlimit EU Ltd, has been an [electronic money institution authorised by the Central Bank of Cyprus](https://paymentinstitutionsregister.eu/institution/cy/unlimit-eu-ltd-former-name-cardpay-ltd-1160) since 9 July 2018.

Whether a business without an Italian entity, Italian VAT number or Italian bank account can open a Satispay Business account directly does not appear on Satispay’s pages, so the entity and bank account a provider accepts are set in its contract.

## How Unlimit supports Satispay in Italy

Satispay appears as a digital wallet for Italy on [Unlimit’s Europe and UK coverage page](https://www.unlimit.com/coverage/europe-uk/europe-uk/). In 2024, the Italian ferry company Moby partnered with Unlimit for payments on its online bookings ([Unlimit blog](https://www.unlimit.com/blog/press-release/unlimit-and-moby-partner-to-simplify-access-to-sustainable-transportation-options-for-customers-worldwide/)). Satispay fees through Unlimit are quoted per business.

Through [one Unlimit REST API](https://www.unlimit.com/payment-processing/), a business adds Satispay next to cards and 1,000+ local payment methods across 200+ locations, and the same coverage page lists SEPA Instant and Open Banking for Europe. Payment links, dynamic QR codes and real-time callbacks are available, while the Satispay conditions, the refund terms and the settlement currency are agreed during onboarding; Unlimit supports 50+ currencies.

## FAQ

**Does Satispay run on its own payment network?**Satispay runs on its own payment network, which it created in 2015 and on which it later built value-added services, as its June 2026 newsroom note recounts. That makes Satispay’s own business terms the first document a business should read before accepting it, rather than the rules of a card scheme or a bank.

**Is there a limit on the devices a business can enable for Satispay?**Satispay puts no limit on the number of devices a business can enable, as its help centre guide to accepting payments sets out. A shop with several tills or staff phones can therefore enable each of them without meeting a device cap, although the vendor of a cash register or POS may set its own conditions for the upgrade.

**Do tobacconists and newsagents pay a different Satispay fee?**Tobacconists and newsagents pay a different Satispay fee: 0.5% on transactions of EUR 10 or more and nothing under EUR 10, but only when the activity is listed as primary in the Italian Chamber of Commerce extract (Visura Camerale). A business in either trade should check that extract before assuming the lower rate applies to it.

**How does a business file a complaint with Satispay?**A business with a complaint about Satispay writes to business@satispay.com, the address on the complaints page of Satispay’s help centre. When writing, quote the payment date, amount and payer reference from the Satispay Business Dashboard, so that Satispay can match the complaint to the payment without further questions.

**Are funds held by Satispay protected if it becomes insolvent?**Satispay’s business terms protect funds received in exchange for E-money if Satispay becomes insolvent: they are safeguarded under European and national regulations and cannot be exposed to Satispay’s creditors. A business that keeps a balance in its Merchant Account for refunds should still read the same terms for how that balance is paid out.
