# Paytm for Business: How It Works, How to Accept It and What to Expect

A business can accept Paytm through QR codes, Paytm Soundbox devices, card machines or an online payment gateway, with typical next-day settlement for T plus N merchants, verified October 2026.

## Key takeaways

- Paytm is a payment app whose customers pay with cards, net banking and UPI. Its merchant side offers a payment aggregator and a payment gateway for online payments.
- UPI processed 24.51 billion transactions in August 2026, up from 23.7 billion in July.
- In store, a business accepts Paytm through QR codes, Paytm Soundbox devices and card machines; Paytm’s Payment Links product collects payments without a website or app.
- Settlement is typically next day for T plus N merchants. UPI payments up to INR 2,000 stay free of MDR. MDR on select merchant UPI payments is set for after Diwali at a date to be notified, and Paytm’s Standard gateway plan lists a platform fee of 1.99% plus 18% GST on the other payment methods.
- Refunds can be initiated only against successful transactions.
- A business contracts Paytm Payments Services Limited, which RBI has authorised as a payment aggregator for online, offline and cross-border transactions.

## What is Paytm?

Paytm for Business is the merchant side of Paytm, a payment app in India whose customers pay with cards, net banking and UPI, per [Paytm investor relations](https://ir.paytm.com/our-business). A business accepts those payments in store through QR codes, Soundbox devices and card machines, and online through a full-stack Payment Aggregator and an All-In-One Payment Gateway. As an aggregator, Paytm can collect, pool and settle digital funds directly into a merchant’s bank account.

UPI is the rail underneath, run by NPCI, which RBI and the Indian Banks’ Association set up to operate retail payments and settlement systems; it carries real-time payments between people or at the merchant’s end ([ETGovernment, Economic Times](https://government.economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/digital-payments/upi-transactions-reach-record-high-of-29-9-lakh-cr-in-july/132803907)). Paytm is a UPI app and an aggregator on top of that rail: the customer chooses the app, and the business chooses the provider that receives the money.

So, is Paytm a payment gateway? For online merchants it is: Paytm runs a payment gateway in India next to its in-store options.

## Why Paytm matters for businesses selling in India

Paytm runs on UPI, which carried 85.5% of India’s transaction volume in H2 2025 ([Grant Thornton Bharat](https://www.grantthornton.in/insights/thought-leadership/india-payments-trends-report-2026/)). UPI recorded 23.7 billion transactions in July 2026 ([Business Standard](https://www.business-standard.com/finance/news/upi-transactions-hit-record-23-66-billion-in-july-value-rs-29-88-trillion-126080100548_1.html)), 22 percent more than in July 2025, and 24.51 billion in August ([Free Press Journal](https://www.freepressjournal.in/business/only-17-merchants-willing-to-accept-04-mdr-on-upi-payments-above-2000-survey)). It also accounted for 84 percent of the transactions processed in India’s retail payment systems in the financial year that ended in March 2025 ([MediaNama, 17 June 2025](https://www.medianama.com/2025/06/223-npci-upi-changes-transaction-speed-fraud-prevention/)).

Acceptance points have grown with it: Bharat QR and UPI QR deployments reached 7,854 lakh in May 2026, up from 1,922 lakh in May 2022, with UPI QR accounting for most of the new adoption ([Grant Thornton Bharat, India Payments Trends Report 2026](https://www.grantthornton.in/insights/thought-leadership/india-payments-trends-report-2026/)). One lakh is 100,000. Paytm says its zero-cost QR solution has enabled more than 50 million merchants to join the digital economy.

![UPI in India and Paytm's stated merchant reach, from the Free Press Journal and Paytm investor relations.](https://cdn.unlimit.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/29165556/paytm-for-business-image-1.webp)*UPI in India and Paytm’s stated merchant reach, from the Free Press Journal and Paytm investor relations.*

Digital payments made up 99.8% of India’s total transaction volume in CY2025 ([Grant Thornton Bharat](https://www.grantthornton.in/insights/thought-leadership/india-payments-trends-report-2026/)). Signing up as a Paytm merchant is one way to accept them.

## How Paytm works

A Paytm payment runs in one line: the customer chooses Paytm at checkout or scans a QR code, pays from a card, internet banking or UPI, Paytm processes the payment with the customer’s bank and confirms it to the business, and the funds settle to the business’s account on its settlement cycle.

### The customer flow, step by step

An online Paytm payment follows Paytm’s All-in-One SDK flow:

- The customer chooses Paytm at the business’s checkout.
- If the Paytm app is installed, the App Invoke flow launches it to finish the transaction ([Paytm Payment Gateway documentation](https://www.paytmpayments.com/docs/all-in-one-sdk/hybrid-apps/flutter)).
- If the app is not installed, the Redirection flow opens a web view to process the transaction.
- Paytm processes the transaction with the customer’s bank.
- Paytm returns the transaction response to the business’s app.

![How an online Paytm payment moves from checkout to the merchant's app, from Paytm's SDK documentation.](https://cdn.unlimit.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/29165602/paytm-for-business-image-2.webp)*How an online Paytm payment moves from checkout to the merchant’s app, from Paytm’s SDK documentation.*

In store, the customer scans the counter QR code with Paytm or another UPI app; PhonePe and Google Pay carried 79.5% of UPI volume in May 2026 ([Grant Thornton Bharat](https://www.grantthornton.in/insights/thought-leadership/india-payments-trends-report-2026/)). PayU, one provider that offers the Paytm wallet, redirects a customer who picks it (bank code PAYTM) to Paytm to complete the payment ([PayU’s wallet integration guide](https://docs.payu.in/v2/docs/v2-wallets-merchant-hostede-integration)).

### What happens on the merchant side

A Paytm merchant sees two events between the order and the money: confirmation and settlement. In store, Soundbox devices give real-time voice payment confirmations in more than 10 languages.

Online, the business validates the response server-side with the Transaction Status API and checks the order ID and amount against its own data; an order ships on that check, never on the customer’s screen alone. Processors add their own check: PayU, for one, asks businesses to verify each wallet payment with its Verify Payment API before providing the service ([PayU’s wallet payment steps](https://docs.payu.in/v2/docs/v2-wallets-merchant-hostede-integration)).

[Paytm’s settlement documentation](https://www.paytmpayments.com/docs/settlement-processing-in-paytm) says money collected until 12 AM is settled the next day for T plus N merchants. Same-day (early) settlement is also offered. Paytm notifies merchants of any pending or failed settlement at least once a day.

When a UPI payment leaves the customer’s bank account but is not confirmed at the merchant, auto-reversal is due within five days (T plus 5), with compensation of INR 100 a day for delay beyond that, under RBI rules reported by [The Hindu BusinessLine](https://www.thehindubusinessline.com/money-and-banking/rbi-unveils-norms-to-resolve-disputes-related-to-failed-digital-transactions/article29470794.ece). Reconciling each payment by its order ID and transaction reference puts a late confirmation or reversal on the right order.

## Ways to accept Paytm: QR codes, Paytm Soundbox, card machines and the Paytm payment gateway

A business accepts Paytm in store with QR codes, Soundbox devices and card machines, and online with its payment gateway and its Payment Links or Subscriptions products.

[Paytm Payments Services](https://www.paytmpayments.com/) runs the Paytm payment gateway, which lets a business accept online payments on an app or a website. In an app, the integration runs on Paytm’s APIs and SDKs, with the All-in-One SDK handling the App Invoke and Redirection flows. Paytm’s Payment Links product lets a business collect payments instantly without a website or app, and its Subscriptions product sets customised payment plans with automated recurring collection.

In 2023, Paytm had 6.8 million Soundbox devices deployed and cut its Soundbox subscription fee to INR 78 ([Rest of World](https://restofworld.org/2023/india-sound-boxes-paytm-phonepe/)). CCAvenue lists Paytm Wallet among the prepaid cards and wallets it accepts ([CCAvenue’s payment options page](https://www.ccavenue.com/widest-range-of-payment-options)).

## Benefits of accepting Paytm

Paytm offers a business three gains, each with a catch:

- Instant confirmation at the counter: a Soundbox announces each payment by voice, and the device carries a monthly rental fee.
- Faster access to funds: same-day (early) settlement is offered next to T plus N, at minimum fees set by business type.
- Automated repeat billing: Paytm’s Subscriptions product automates recurring collection, while Paytm’s UPI recurring documentation is not published.

## Limitations to plan for before you accept Paytm

Three things shape Paytm operations: how money goes back to customers and how disputes run, the amount limits and licence scope, and what Paytm does not publish.

### Refunds, chargebacks and disputes

A Paytm refund can be initiated only against a successful transaction, in full or in part, and moves the money back to the customer’s source account, such as a UPI-linked bank account. Paytm Payments Services also offers Instant Refunds. Unlimit carries Paytm within Indian wallets (WALLETSINR), captured in one step: two-phase capture covers only cards, Google Pay and Apple Pay ([Unlimit refunds and capture guide](https://integration.unlimit.com/doc-guides/dmtgtqzmm3hcx)).

RBI’s payment aggregator rules, reported by [Mint](https://www.livemint.com/industry/banking/rbi-payment-aggregator-rules-digital-payments-guidelines-cybersecurity-audit-india-merchant-onboarding-rules-11758095408920.html), require aggregators to run dispute resolution mechanisms with timelines for processing refunds. Refunds go automatically to the original method of payment unless the payer instructs otherwise. Paytm’s own refund timelines are not published.

### Chargebacks and UPI disputes

A chargeback is a dispute the customer raises with the issuing bank when the product or service is not delivered and not refunded. The merchant must then give proof of delivery within a given timeline; without it, Paytm debits the amount from forward settlements.

Banks and payment apps track and resolve UPI chargeback disputes on URCS, a common platform for such complaints ([CNBC-TV18](https://www.cnbctv18.com/personal-finance/upi-new-rules-npci-july-15-failed-payments-refund-quicker-banks-users-impact-19636628.htm)). Since 15 July 2025, banks can mark genuine, previously declined chargebacks as fit for reprocessing.

Proof of delivery kept against every order ID answers a chargeback; the refund route is set in the merchant agreement.

### Amount limits and licence scope

A UPI payment through Paytm is capped at INR 100,000 in general, with higher limits of INR 200,000 or INR 500,000 for specific merchant use cases ([Upstox](https://upstox.com/news/business-news/financial-regulations/rbi-empowers-npci-to-set-upi-transaction-limits-for-person-to-merchant-payments/article-159396/)). RBI bars payment aggregators from limiting the transaction amount for a payment mode, which the issuing bank or entity controls. Paytm’s own limits are not published.

RBI cancelled the banking licence of Paytm Payments Bank Limited and prohibited it from conducting any business ([News On AIR](https://newsonair.gov.in/reserve-bank-of-india-cancels-banking-licence-of-paytm-payments-bank/)), after early 2024 restrictions that disallowed further deposits, credits and top-ups in existing customer accounts and prepaid instruments.

A business therefore contracts Paytm Payments Services Limited, the aggregator, rather than the bank, and settles to a bank account at another bank; the provider’s own limits are set in the contract.

Cashfree, one provider that pays out to Paytm wallets, states a limit of up to INR 1 lakh for customers who completed KYC registration and needs only the beneficiary’s phone number ([Cashfree’s payout methods guide](https://www.cashfree.com/docs/payouts/payouts/make-payouts/payout-methods)).

## What Paytm costs a business

Paytm publishes its own payment gateway pricing: the Standard plan for startups and small and medium businesses carries a platform fee of 1.99% per transaction plus 18% GST, with no setup fee and no annual maintenance charge, and large businesses get custom Enterprise pricing ([Paytm Payments, Pricing](https://www.paytmpayments.com/pricing), checked 29 October 2026). The 1.99% headline does not override the government rules: UPI payments up to INR 2,000 and RuPay debit card payments stay free of charges ([Free Press Journal](https://www.freepressjournal.in/business/only-17-merchants-willing-to-accept-04-mdr-on-upi-payments-above-2000-survey)), so the platform fee applies to the other payment methods. Paytm earns on these transactions through merchant discount rates charged to merchants and convenience fees charged to users where applicable. A Paytm Soundbox carries a monthly rental fee, and early settlement carries minimum fees set by business type and applicability.

A Paytm merchant’s net settlement is payments accepted, less commission, less GST at 18 percent of the commission fee, less other deductions such as rental, refunds, chargebacks, reversals and recovery.

On 14 September 2026 the government notified that UPI transactions up to INR 2,000 would remain free of MDR ([Times Now](https://www.timesnownews.com/business-economy/economy/upi-charges-return-0-4-mdr-on-payments-above-rs-2000-who-pays-who-is-exempt-article-156162736)). Person-to-person UPI transactions stay free whatever the amount. NPCI’s steering committee decided that MDR on select person-to-merchant UPI transactions will start immediately after Diwali, at a date to be notified separately ([Deccan Herald](https://www.deccanherald.com/india/mdr-on-upi-deferred-until-after-diwali-npci-4181482)). RBI’s aggregator rules require any charge other than the merchant’s price to be shown distinctly to the payer before the transaction.

Take an INR 1,500 order paid by UPI: it carries no MDR, so nothing is deducted for commission or GST, though any rental, refund or chargeback still comes off the settlement. Paid by RuPay debit card, the same order would also carry no MDR ([Free Press Journal](https://www.freepressjournal.in/business/only-17-merchants-willing-to-accept-04-mdr-on-upi-payments-above-2000-survey)). Which payment modes carry MDR, and at what rate, is set in the merchant’s contract. A business that takes Paytm through a payment provider such as PayU or CCAvenue also pays that provider’s fees, and each provider sets its own rates.

## Paytm vs UPI and cards

Paytm is a provider on top of UPI and cards, so a business compares providers, not Paytm against UPI, and most businesses offer UPI and cards both.

Paytm vs UPI and cards

| Attribute | Paytm | UPI | Cards |
|---|---|---|---|
| What it is | App and merchant acceptance platform with an aggregator | Real-time payment rail run by NPCI | An instrument Paytm accepts alongside UPI and net banking |
| Dispute route | Merchant gives proof of delivery, otherwise forward settlements are debited | Banks and payment apps resolve disputes on the URCS platform | The cardholder disputes with the issuing bank |
| Refunds | Full or partial, to the customer’s source account | To the original method of payment | To the original method of payment |
| Reach | More than 50 million merchants, as Paytm states | 84 percent of retail payment transactions in FY2024-25 | Not published |

## How to accept Paytm: a business checklist

Paytm acceptance goes live in six steps:

- Decide which payment partner you contract with for accepting payments. Paytm Payments Services Limited holds RBI authorisation for Online Payment Aggregation ([Moneycontrol, 18 December 2025](https://www.moneycontrol.com/news/business/markets/rbi-clears-paytm-arm-ppsl-as-payment-aggregator-for-offline-cross-border-transactions-13731677.html)). RBI’s final rules cover online, in-store and cross-border aggregators. Unlimit is one such provider: it takes UPI and wallets for [RailYatri and IntrCity SmartBus](https://www.unlimit.com/blog/press-release/unlimit-partners-with-railyatri-and-intrcity-smartbus-to-power-seamless-payments-for-indias-largest-mobility-platform/).
- Go through the provider’s onboarding for the Paytm business account: the aggregator background-checks the merchant and makes sure its payments match its business type. RBI’s 2025 payment aggregator directions, summarised in [AZB & Partners’ note](https://www.azbpartners.com/bank/rbi-issues-consolidated-reserve-bank-of-india-regulation-of-payment-aggregators-directions-2025/), require merchant KYC at onboarding to use the Central KYC Records Registry (CKYCR). Paytm’s document list is not published; request it from the provider at the start. For payouts, a PSP may ask for more: Cashfree, for example, requires a Paytm business account to pay into Paytm wallets ([Cashfree’s payouts FAQ](https://www.cashfree.com/docs/payouts/payouts/general-faqs)).
- Choose the modes: Soundbox, QR codes or card machines in store; the gateway, Paytm’s Payment Links or its Subscriptions product online.
- Connect payment status to the order system: validate every online response server-side with the Transaction Status API and keep orders pending until that check passes.
- Confirm the settlement cycle, the refund route, the chargeback timeline and the fee lines with the provider in the signed contract.
- Test successful, failed, reversed and refunded payments end to end, then launch.

### Accepting Paytm from outside India

Paytm acceptance from outside India runs through a cross-border route: Paytm Payments Services Limited, a subsidiary of One97 Communications, has RBI’s authorisation to act as a payment aggregator for offline payments and cross-border transactions ([Electronic Payments International](https://www.electronicpaymentsinternational.com/news/paytm-payment-licence/)). RBI caps each transaction processed by a cross-border payment aggregator at INR 2.5 million.

### Onboarding without an Indian entity

Paytm does not publish a route for onboarding a business without an Indian entity. Two points therefore decide the route a foreign business needs: whether its provider holds a cross-border payment aggregator authorisation, and whether that provider can onboard a business without an Indian entity.

RBI’s 2025 directions keep PA-CB collections in separate inward and outward collection accounts ([AZB & Partners](https://www.azbpartners.com/bank/rbi-issues-consolidated-reserve-bank-of-india-regulation-of-payment-aggregators-directions-2025/)), and forex runs through authorised dealer banks ([IndiaCorpLaw](https://indiacorplaw.in/2025/10/09/decoding-rbis-overhaul-of-the-payment-aggregator-directions/)). Set-up without an Indian entity is discussed during onboarding.

## How Unlimit supports Paytm in India

[Unlimit’s India coverage page](https://www.unlimit.com/coverage/india/india/) names Paytm among its digital wallets.

Unlimit received a Reserve Bank of India Online Payment Aggregator licence, announced on 25 April 2024 with its entry into the Indian market ([India launch press release](https://www.unlimit.com/blog/press-release/unlimit-secures-online-payment-aggregator-license-in-india-and-launches-operations-in-the-region/)). Its Payment Aggregator Cross Border (PA-CB) licence received final RBI authorisation, per [Unlimit’s press release on the RBI cross-border licence](https://www.unlimit.com/blog/press-release/rbi-grants-unlimit-cross-border-licence-removing-barriers-for-india-to-global-markets/).

Sellers outside India can add Paytm to their checkout through one Unlimit integration, alongside cards, UPI and net banking. Paytm fees through Unlimit are quoted per business.

## FAQ

**Which company runs the Paytm payment gateway?**The Paytm payment gateway is run by Paytm Payments Services Limited. Its website gives the company’s full legal name and corporate identification number (CIN) U65990DL2020PLC371251. Check that name and number on the contract and on invoices when onboarding, so the agreement is with the entity that holds the aggregator authorisation rather than with another Paytm company.

**How does money reach a business’s bank account from Paytm?**Money reaches a business’s bank account from Paytm in two legs. Paytm’s documented flow collects funds debited from customers’ bank accounts in the payment aggregator’s nodal account through acquirers on T plus 1. The aggregator then settles the merchant from that account. Plan cash flow around that bank leg, not around the moment the customer pays.

**Does the government collect the UPI merchant discount rate?**The government does not collect the UPI merchant discount rate: the Finance Ministry has clarified that MDR is neither a tax nor a charge collected by the government or NPCI. A business should therefore read MDR as a provider-side charge that belongs as a separate line in its pricing, and not expect it on any tax invoice.

**Where does Paytm keep customer money before settling a business?**Customer money sits in an escrow account before settlement: RBI’s payment aggregator rules require all aggregators to keep customer money in a separate account at scheduled banks, called an escrow account. A business using Paytm’s aggregator service can ask the provider to name the scheduled bank that holds that account and the point at which funds leave it for settlement.

**Can a business capture a Paytm payment after delivery?**A business can capture a Paytm payment after delivery through Paytm’s pre-auth flow, which accepts payment details at the start of the journey and captures the amount once the service or goods are delivered. Standard Auth allows a maximum capture period of 72 hours (recommended) for wallet and postpaid sources and 96 hours for cards.
