# OPay for Business: How It Works, How to Accept It and What to Expect

A business in Nigeria accepts OPay through a merchant account, the OPay Cashier hosted page or server-side APIs, and confirms each payment by callback or status check, verified October 2026.

## Key takeaways

- OPay is a mobile wallet and payment platform run by OPay Digital Services Limited, which sits in the Mobile Money Operator licence category of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).
- OPay reported in June 2026 that it had passed 45 million users and supports more than 1 million merchants and businesses across Nigeria.
- The customer is redirected to the OPay wallet to authorise the debit, so the business fulfils an order only after it verifies the final status.
- A business accepts OPay through the OPay Cashier hosted page, server-side APIs or e-commerce plugins.
- OPay publishes a checkout fee of 1.5% per local transaction, capped at NGN 2,000, and a complaint goes to the institution first and to the CBN only after the institution fails to resolve it.
- A business starts by registering a merchant account in the OPay app and giving the required information.

## What is OPay?

OPay is a mobile wallet and payment platform, run in Nigeria by [OPay Digital Services Limited](https://opaybusiness.opayweb.com/about), that lets customers send money, pay bills and pay businesses in naira. Its OPay Business network lets merchants accept those payments. The company’s operations in Nigeria started in 2018. [dLocal](https://www.dlocal.com/payment-method/opay-payment/), one provider that offers OPay, describes it as an eWallet for money transfers, bill payments and other financial transactions for Nigerian consumers. [Unlimit](https://www.unlimit.com/coverage/africa/nigeria/) carries OPay among its live digital wallets in Nigeria, for businesses based there.

Three names are easy to mix up. The OPay app is the customer’s wallet. OPay Business is the merchant side. OPay Cashier is the hosted checkout.

The customer always pays from the wallet, and the business chooses how it receives the money.

### Licensing and regulation

OPay says it is licensed and regulated by the Central Bank of Nigeria and insured by the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation. The full name behind the brand is Opay Digital Services Limited, formerly Paycom Nigeria Limited, which appears on the [CBN’s list of payment service providers](https://www.cbn.gov.ng/PaymentsSystem/PSPs.html) under the Mobile Money Operator licence category.

The CBN is the main institution that regulates the [Nigerian payments system](https://www.cbn.gov.ng/PaymentsSystem/). Its payments system issuances include the Regulatory Framework for Mobile Money Services in Nigeria, dated 2015.

## Why OPay matters for businesses selling in Nigeria

OPay is a wallet that a large share of Nigerian customers already hold. It passed 45 million users and supports more than 1 million merchants and businesses across Nigeria, by the company’s own count [reported by Nairametrics on 1 June 2026](https://nairametrics.com/2026/06/01/opay-hits-45-million-users-expands-merchant-network-to-over-1-million-nationwide/). The same company figures show monthly active transacting users rising from 25.1 million in 2024 to 39.3 million by the end of 2025. OPay Business counts its merchant network as nationwide, covering all 36 states.

A [KPMG Nigeria and Orange Group study reported by THISDAY](https://www.thisdaylive.com/2026/10/08/kpmg-opay-leads-fintech-payment-apps-with-69-smartphone-penetration/) found that OPay led Nigerian fintech payment apps in 2025 with 69 per cent smartphone penetration.

Across the market, the CBN recorded 38.7 billion e-payment transactions from January to December 2023 in its [e-payment statistics](https://www.cbn.gov.ng/PaymentsSystem/ePaymentStatistics.html), and 10.8 billion of them ran through mobile money operators.

![OPay's reach and mobile money volume in Nigeria: more than 45 million users and more than 1 million merchants and businesses in June 2026, and 10.8 billion mobile money operator transactions in 2023, from Nairametrics and the CBN.](https://cdn.unlimit.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/29165536/opay-for-business-image-1.webp)*OPay’s reach and mobile money volume in Nigeria: more than 45 million users and more than 1 million merchants and businesses in June 2026, and 10.8 billion mobile money operator transactions in 2023, from Nairametrics and the CBN.*

CBN data put e-payments at 47.9 billion transactions in 2025, growth it tied to digital channels and e-commerce ([Leadership](https://leadership.ng/e-payments-hit-n3-46quadrillion-amid-143-4m-pan-african-transactions-cbn/)).

## How OPay works

An OPay payment follows one path: the business sends the customer to their OPay wallet, the customer logs in, chooses a balance and authorises the debit, OPay handles the security checks, and the business verifies the final status before it delivers.

### The customer flow, step by step

Flutterwave, one provider that offers OPay, documents the payment in five customer steps; other providers may run the flow differently. Through Unlimit, a business can accept OPay (code OPAY) on the payment page or via the gateway API ([Card methods integration guide](https://integration.unlimit.com/doc-guides/ci8k5zm86k3ny-card-methods)). Paystack, another provider that offers OPay, shows it under the Bank option on Paystack’s checkout page. There the customer clicks Authenticate to be redirected to their OPay account and gets a verification code on their registered OPay phone number, as [Paystack’s Pay with OPay guide](https://support.paystack.com/en/articles/2131202) describes.

- The merchant collects the customer’s email, phone number and full name to start the payment.
- The merchant redirects the customer to their OPay wallet.
- The customer logs into their OPay account and selects the balance to pay from.
- The customer authorises the OPay debit, which comes straight out of the wallet.
- OPay handles authorisation and security checks inside the wallet.

![How an OPay payment moves from the customer to the business; merchant callbacks and status checks as in OPay's Checkout API documentation.](https://cdn.unlimit.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/29165542/opay-for-business-image-2.webp)*How an OPay payment moves from the customer to the business; merchant callbacks and status checks as in OPay’s Checkout API documentation.*

### What happens on the merchant side

A business that collects payments with OPay sees a status in its order system first and the money second. Payment processors ask for a server-side check; Flutterwave, for one, requires the merchant to verify the final status of the OPay transaction once the customer authorises. Before providing value, the merchant checks the amount, the transaction reference and the status.

A business that takes OPay through Unlimit gets a real-time callback for each payment; conditions per method are discussed during onboarding ([payment link guide](https://integration.unlimit.com/doc-guides/vejut2c18ng0y-p-payment-link)). Interswitch, another provider that offers OPay, runs the integration in two steps: initialising the payment, then checking its status ([Interswitch’s OPay integration documentation](https://docs.interswitchgroup.com/docs/opay-integration-1)).

[OPay’s server-side APIs](https://doc.opaycheckout.com/reference-code) send the merchant instant callback notifications whenever a transaction status changes and let it pull the status on demand.

Confirmation and settlement are separate events. OPay says merchants receive funds into their OPay wallet instantly, with no wait for end-of-day reconciliation. Settlement time to a bank for online checkout varies by provider. OPay also gives merchants a dashboard of all their business transactions, and each payment is reconciled by its transaction reference and order ID.

That callback carries a payment ID the store can query again, so no order ships on a customer’s screenshot ([Payments integration types](https://integration.unlimit.com/doc-guides/v396nzw6ayeza)).

## Ways to accept OPay: merchant account, OPay Cashier, APIs and plugins

A business accepts OPay through a merchant account with PoS terminals, QR payments or online payments, or by integrating OPay Cashier, the server-side APIs or a plugin into its own checkout.

### Integration options

- OPay Cashier: OPay’s express checkout creates an OPay-hosted payment page to collect payments, and the charge response comes to a callback notification URL the merchant selects. It suits a business that wants OPay at checkout without building payment screens.
- Server-side APIs: the merchant builds its own user interface for each payment method, on RESTful APIs that OPay presents as PCI-compliant for accepting and making payments.
- Plugins: OPay offers e-commerce plugins for the most popular frameworks and recommends them for web applications built on frameworks such as WordPress, WooCommerce and Shopify.
- PoS terminals and QR payments: in-person acceptance runs on OPay PoS terminals and QR codes. The 2021 Framework for Quick Response (QR) Code Payments in Nigeria sits among the CBN’s payments system issuances, and the CBN recorded 9.8 billion POS transactions over the whole of 2023. [BusinessDay’s report on PoS growth](https://businessday.ng/companies/article/pos-growth-slows-as-nigerias-payments-market-enters-new-phase/) puts deployed PoS devices at an estimated 8.4 million by early 2025, up from about 156,000 terminals in 2017.

Payment links, recurring or tokenised payments and QR acceptance steps sit outside OPay’s documentation for these modes, so a business confirms them with OPay before planning on them. At one PSP, Paystack, OPay sits under the Bank option at checkout, and customers currently cannot make recurring payments with that [Pay with Bank payment channel](https://support.paystack.com/en/articles/2131202).

## Benefits of accepting OPay

Accepting OPay gives a business three advantages, each with a limit to plan around.

- Instant funds: OPay says payments reach the merchant’s OPay wallet at once; settlement to a bank for online checkout varies by provider.
- A wallet customers already hold: the 2025 KPMG study that ranked OPay first surveyed 13,251 people in 12 cities; only OPay account holders can pay this way ([THISDAY](https://www.thisdaylive.com/2026/10/08/kpmg-opay-leads-fintech-payment-apps-with-69-smartphone-penetration/)).
- Several integration routes: ready-made e-commerce plugins or a custom interface on the APIs; recurring payments and payment links are outside the published options.

## Limitations to plan for before you accept OPay

Three things shape day-to-day operations with OPay: how failed payments and refunds run, what OPay leaves open on disputes, and the account limits and alert timing.

### Refunds, reversals and failed payments

A failed card transaction on an OPay POS reverses instantly to the cardholder’s account, so a merchant that uses the terminal to accept card payments lets the reversal finish before pulling the card out.

### Refunds for online payments

Refunds for OPay online payments vary by provider. OPay does not publish a merchant-initiated refund process, timeline or API. OPay also disclaims responsibility for money collections after incorrect transactions between peers, such as a transfer to a wrong account number. Unlimit supports refunds for OPay (method OPAY), though not recurring payments ([Card methods integration guide](https://integration.unlimit.com/doc-guides/ci8k5zm86k3ny-card-methods)).

Among Unlimit’s other Nigerian methods, online banking and virtual accounts take no refunds, while cards do; every refund carries the order ID and transaction reference ([Payment methods](https://integration.unlimit.com/doc-guides/ci8k5zm86k3ny)).

### Disputes and complaints

OPay publishes no chargeback or dispute procedure with timelines for merchants, so a disputed payment follows the CBN’s complaint route. Chargebacks generally mean the reversal of a payment or request for repayment in a transaction previously settled or remitted, in the words of [TNP’s Legal 500 note on chargeback periods](https://www.legal500.com/intelligence/nigeria/finance-and-banking/chargeback-period-reduction-for-atms-pos-and-web-transactions). Causes include unauthorised amounts, wrong details, duplicates or non-delivery.

### The CBN complaint route

The [CBN’s complaint guide](https://www.cbn.gov.ng/FinInc/FinLit/LodgeComplaint.html) sends a complaint against a CBN-regulated institution to that institution first, with about 2 weeks allowed for resolution. A 30 June 2014 circular gives banks 30 days to resolve complaints on excess charges and loans. Only when the institution fails to resolve a case within the 2 weeks or 30 days does it move to the CBN Consumer Protection Department, which handles complaints against institutions within the CBN’s regulatory purview.

A merchant’s case rests on the transaction reference, the amount and the timestamps, and the first written complaint goes to OPay.

### Limits and delayed transfer alerts

An OPay merchant account can receive and send up to NGN 5 million a day, and the limits for each KYC tier are not part of OPay’s public terms.

The CBN set a daily withdrawal limit of NGN 100,000 on point-of-sale terminals, [as Vanguard reported in December 2024](https://allafrica.com/stories/202412200389.html), and gave its reasons as addressing operational challenges, reducing fraud and setting uniform standards across the industry. The cap applies to cash withdrawals on POS terminals, not to wallet payments.

OPay’s merchant FAQ says transfer alerts can take a few days to arrive, so merchants tell customers to check their OPay balance first.

Orders above the daily limit are split or moved to a second payment method, and goods are never released on a transfer alert alone.

## What OPay costs a business

OPay publishes its own merchant pricing for OPay Checkout, its online payment product in Nigeria: 1.5% per local transaction, capped at NGN 2,000, and 4% per international transaction, with no monthly or setup fee ([OPay Checkout, Pricing](https://www.opaycheckout.com/pricing.html), checked 29 October 2026). A payout costs NGN 5 to an OPay wallet and NGN 10, NGN 25 or NGN 50 to another bank or mobile money operator, by amount.

The OPay merchant account also sends and receives money in real time from any bank for as low as NGN 10 per transfer.

A business that takes OPay through a payment provider such as Flutterwave or dLocal also pays that provider’s fees, and each provider sets its own rates. The net amount on each order is the order amount minus OPay’s fee minus any gateway or provider fee, with each fee taken from the contract. A provider may add an extra charge, which belongs on its own line in that contract.

## OPay vs cards and bank transfer

Money reaches an OPay account in three ways, and each needs a different check from the business.

OPay vs cards and bank transfer

| Attribute | OPay wallet payment | Card on an OPay POS | Bank transfer to an OPay account |
|---|---|---|---|
| Customer needs | An OPay account: login and a chosen balance | A bank card | The merchant’s OPay account number |
| What the merchant checks | Final status, amount and transaction reference | That the reversal completes before the card is removed | The OPay balance, since alerts can take a few days |
| Failed payment | The merchant verifies the final status before delivering | Instant reversal to the cardholder | OPay is not responsible for collecting money sent to a wrong account number |
| Recurring payments | Not published by OPay | Not published by OPay | Not published by OPay |

Bank apps reached fewer phones than OPay in 2025: 11 per cent each for Access Bank and UBA, in the KPMG study ([THISDAY](https://www.thisdaylive.com/2026/10/08/kpmg-opay-leads-fintech-payment-apps-with-69-smartphone-penetration/)). Most businesses combine all three.

## How to accept OPay: a business checklist

Business owners and the engineers who build their checkout take OPay live in six steps, in this order.

- Choose how to receive OPay: directly from OPay or through a provider. Non-bank merchant acquiring has its own CBN framework, the Regulatory Framework on Non-bank Merchant Acquiring in Nigeria, dated 2021. Unlimit, one provider of OPay, takes it next to PayPal, Verve cards and PayAttitude in Nigeria ([Nigeria coverage page](https://www.unlimit.com/coverage/africa/nigeria/)).
- Register the merchant account. This is how to open an OPay Business account, as searchers call it: download the OPay app available on Google Play, follow the registration instructions and give all the required business details for approval. A PSP may add its own checks: Flutterwave, for example, asks for KYC to be finished before OPay is added as a payment method. Unlimit holds a [CBN Payment Solution Service Provider licence (2023)](https://guardian.ng/business-services/unlimint-expands-reach-to-nigeria-offering-cutting-edge-payment-technology/) and offers OPay to businesses based in Nigeria; required documents are confirmed with the business.
- Choose the integration: OPay Cashier for a hosted page, the server-side APIs for a custom interface, or an e-commerce plugin.
- Connect OPay’s callback notifications and status pull to the order system, and check the amount, transaction reference and status before delivering.
- Confirm the refund route, settlement timing and fee lines with OPay or the provider, and record them in the contract.
- Test a successful, a failed and a reversed payment end to end, then go live.

## How Unlimit supports OPay in Nigeria

Unlimit supports OPay as one of the digital wallets on its [Nigeria coverage page](https://www.unlimit.com/coverage/africa/nigeria/). The CBN’s payment service providers page lists Unlimit’s Nigerian entity, Unlimint Nigeria Ltd, under the Payment Solution Service Provider (PSSP) authorisation. Unlimit offers OPay to businesses based in Nigeria and also sends [payouts to the OPay wallet](https://www.unlimit.com/payouts/).

A Nigerian store on Unlimit also takes online banking from 14 banks, GTBank and Kuda among them ([Nigeria coverage page](https://www.unlimit.com/coverage/africa/nigeria/)). OPay fees through Unlimit are quoted per business.

## FAQ

**Does a business need CAC documents to register as an OPay merchant?**A business can register as an OPay merchant without Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) or business name documents, under OPay’s merchant FAQ. That is OPay’s own registration rule. A gateway or provider that offers OPay can apply its own KYC, so the documents each one requires shape the timeline for going live with it.

**Can a business send invoices through OPay?**A business can send invoices through OPay: its online payment solutions let merchants generate invoices directly and send them to customers, under OPay’s payment documentation. Invoicing suits a business that bills after delivery or by agreement rather than at a checkout. Payment links and recurring billing sit outside that documentation, so a business plans on them only once OPay confirms them.

**Can a merchant reach OPay support when a payment goes wrong?**A merchant can reach OPay support at any hour: OPay says trained customer service representatives are available 24/7 for every transaction issue a merchant experiences. That is a published support commitment, not a dispute procedure, and it sets no chargeback process or timelines. A support case needs the order ID, amount and transaction reference to hand, plus a written record of the issue.

**What checks does the CBN expect before a merchant gets a POS terminal?**The CBN expects proper due diligence on all merchants before a POS terminal is allocated, under its card fraud prevention circulars. A business applying for an OPay POS should therefore expect the provider to run checks on it before the terminal is allocated, so the business documents for those checks belong early in its plans.

**Does OPay lend money to businesses?**OPay does lend money: loans it issued contributed 50.6% of total revenue and payments 27.9% in its first half of 2026 results, as Nairametrics reported in October 2026. Those results do not show whether business accounts can borrow, so a merchant that wants credit plans around OPay lending only once OPay offers terms to business accounts.
